Don’t Send Acne Back to School

In this oddest of years, whether your teenager is back in actual physical school at this point is an unknown. One thing that is known is your teenager probably suffers from some degree of acne. It is the universal bane of teenagers the world over.

Dr. Kronberg helps many Houston teens with their acne thanks to her board-certified dermatology expertise.

What causes acne?

Despite being on virtually every teenage face, the causes of acne are not fully understood. It’s thought to be caused by the raging hormones that are a part of puberty. In both sexes, it’s the male hormone androgen that is the problem. When its levels go crazy that causes the sebaceous glands to overproduce oil. While that oil is necessary to keep our skin and hair from drying out, when it is overproduced the glands can’t keep up and they become clogged. Now the p.acnes bacteria have a field day in the clogged gland, multiplying like rabbits. The gland becomes inflamed, and the teen now has a whitehead, blackhead, or pustule and a breakout.

How does Dr. Kronberg treat acne?

Dr. Kronberg customizes each acne treatment to each acne patient. She may use these topical medications:

  • Retinoids
  • Antibiotics
  • Salicylic and azelaic acid
  • Dapsone

Or these oral medications:

  • Antibiotics
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Anti-androgen agents
  • Isotretinoin (Accutane)

Or, she may use these non-medication treatments:

  • Lasers and photodynamic therapy (in combination with Levulan)
  • Chemical peels
  • Steroid injections (cystic acne)

When us older types were young, acne was completely misunderstood, and treatments were correspondingly worthless (remember trying to get your skin as dried out as possible?). Today, that’s not the case. Dr. Kronberg’s various tools for treating acne are very effective at reducing or eliminating breakouts and the annoyance that is acne vulgaris.

Don’t send your teen back to school with a face full of pimples. Call Dr. Kronberg at (713) 771-8941 and let her help get that acne under control.
