What is Botox?
Botox is one of the world’s most well known brands. This all began in 2002 when the FDA approved Botox to treat wrinkles on the forehead and between the eyebrows. These are known as “dynamic wrinkles” because they are produced by muscle contractions under the skin. In 2013, the FDA added crow’s feet to Botox’s approved usages (although it had been used off-label for crow’s feet for years).
Why all the love? Botox works. Plain and simple. That’s why it has been the world’s most popular cosmetic procedure — surgical and non-surgical — every year since 2002.
How does Botox work?
Botox is made from the botulinum toxin type A. These are the same bacteria that can cause botulism, and that sounds kind of scary, but it’s not really. Way back in the 1950s, scientists discovered that when injected in minute amounts into a muscle, the botulinum toxin stopped the muscle from contracting. It did this by blocking the nerve messages sent from the muscle to the brain. Because the brain never receives the message to contract the injected muscle, it stays at rest. The wrinkle that forms above the contracted muscle then never forms.
Botox works on forehead lines, frown lines (the 11s between your brows), and on crow’s feet. Some patients have success with smile lines and neck banding, but those are completely individual results.
Botox for parties
You have parties. Dr. Kronberg has Botox. We should get together. A Botox session with Dr. Kronberg (she injects all of the Botox, so that the patient can be assured her extensive knowledge of facial anatomy will ensure the best results) takes just 10-15 minutes. Afterwards you can get right back to your normal activities. The one thing to remember, however, is that Botox takes 3-4 days to fully relax the muscle. So you need to take that into account before having Botox to prepare for a holiday party.
