Come into the light! That’s what you should be saying to your skin and its red and brown discolorations, its broken capillaries, its rosacea, and its red acne scars.
Come into the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).
IPL is a non-invasive procedure that uses multiple wavelengths of light energy to treat skin issues on the hands, neck, and chest. The procedure with Dr. Kronberg is tailored to the individual skin type and condition of each patient.
How IPL works
Intense pulsed light devices are non-laser, high-intensity light sources that produce light using bursts of electric current passed through a xenon gas-filled chamber. The lamp output is then directed through the end of the handpiece and onto the skin.
The pulses are set to target the different treatment needs. For instance, broken capillaries receive different frequency and duration than age spots. The light energy turns into thermal energy in the skin, damaging the targeted epidermal or dermal-pigmented targets, while leaving the surrounding cells undamaged. The three main dictators of human skin color — hemoglobin, water, and melanin — all have broad absorption peaks of light energy, allowing them to be targeted by varying wavelengths of IPL light.
After being targeted, blood vessels coagulate and eventually disappear. Age spots and other skin issues begin to shed their darker cells on the skin surface, and are replaced by younger, undamaged, non-pigmented cells.
The end result is skin with a brighter, more even tone. Some would call it a healthy glow. IPL results with Dr. Kronberg are similar to those of a medium-depth peel, without the downtime and risk.
IPL treatments
Dr. Kronberg recommends a series of five treatments, spaced three to four weeks apart, for the best IPL results. She has been doing IPL treatments since 2001.
