What is Bellafill?

Dermal Fillers Houston, TX Fillers come, and filler goes. Most fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm are injected, and they plump the skin under the wrinkle, pushing the wrinkle or crease back upward. But in time, the body eventually absorbs the filler, and its results diminish.

But there is one filler that is the first FDA approved filler that is permanent — Bellafill, formerly named Artefill. Used in Europe and Canada for over a decade before it came to the U.S., Artefill was approved by the FDA in 2006. The company changed the name to Bellafill in 2014. It offers the longest lasting results of any dermal filler.

What is Bellafill?

Bellafill is made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microsphere that is suspended in bovine collagen. When Dr. Kronberg injects Bellafill, the solution first acts just like any dermal filler, filling the wrinkle above. But the PMMA microspheres also stimulate the body to produce new collagen. As the bovine collagen slowly degrades naturally, the new production of your collagen takes its place. This creates Bellafill’s long-lasting results.

How is Bellafill Different Than Other Fillers?

The biggest difference between Bellafill and other dermal fillers is the durability of its results. Studies have shown that patients who received a Bellafill injection showed an improvement in the nasolabial folds five years after treatment. You read that right — five years. Fillers like Restylane and Juvederm last up to one year. Radiesse is the next longest lasting filler, with results up to two years.

Another difference is the consistency of Bellafill. Its thicker composition when compared to fillers such as Juvederm preclude Bellafill from being used anywhere with thinner skin. For instance, Bellafill should not be used around the eyes where the skin is very thin.

We Test For Reactions First

Before Dr. Kronberg uses Bellafill, she first uses a skin test to check for any reactions. This test runs one month and is then read.

Truly Permanent

Although Bellafill claims it last five years that is just the duration of the study used to gain FDA approval. The PMMA microspheres in Bellafill are truly permanent. They do not reabsorb. They stay and act as a bio stimulant for collagen production.
